She made her feature film debut in 2002 with the comedy-drama Real Women Have Curves, winning praise for her performance. Ferrera is the recipient of numerous awards including an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award among others. America has also been politically active as a speaker for the Women's March, #METOO movement, Families Belong Together, with the organization Voto Latino and one of the founders of the Time's Up legal defense fund.
